Barbara Claxton

Barbara Sawyer Claxton, age 70, passed away September 8, 2019 at University Hospital.

Mrs. Claxton was born August 6, 1949 in Tifton, GA to parents Gerald Winston Sawyer and Juanita Young Sawyer.  She moved from Sylvester, GA to Wrightsville, GA and was a retired educator of 40 years. She was a Girl Scout Troup Leader, member of Brown Memorial Baptist Church and church choir member. She was a graduate of Worth County High School, Abraham Baldwin College, earned her bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern University, and her master’s degree at Georgia College and State University with a degree in Special Education.

She is survived by her husband Edison Claxton of Wrightsville, her three daughters, Barbara Celete Claxton (Donnie) Boone, Anna Nandell Claxton and Heather Hershel Claxton (John) Arnett all of Wrightsville, two brothers Bennie (Margaret) Sawyer and Gerry Sawyer, a sister Joanne Sawyer (Tony) Cleland, and four grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held 1:30 P.M., Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at Brown Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Harry Hadden officiating. Burial to follow in Westview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at Stanley Funeral Home in Wrightsville.

Pallbearers will be Jim Claxton, Josh Claxton, Sean Claxton, Joseph Cleland, Matthew Lindsey and Michael Brantley.

Honorary pallbearers will be teachers and staff of Johnson County Board of Education.
