Acclaimed photographer John Reed will present his End of Summer Nature Photography Workshop at Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge on Sept 21-22. The two-day workshop consists of classroom and hands-on exercises on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and hands-on photography in the field on Sunday morning from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Participants must provide their own camera and any other photographic equipment they need. All photography skill levels are welcome.
The Saturday class will expand students’ basic knowledge and/or build on other sessions taken earlier this year. Participants will dig deeper into key photographic principles such as exposure, metering, and composition. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday consists of a full morning of field photography exploring the refuge, with Reed available to answer questions and offer tips and advice. The focus will be on photographing the plants, flowers, and butterflies that may be seen in late September, as well as the ever-present alligators.
Cost: If payment is received by September 20, the cost for the 2-day workshop is $55, and if interested only in the Sunday session the cost is $25. Walk-ins will be welcome as space permits for an additional $5 fee. The workshop is sponsored in part by the Okefenokee Wildlife League, with a portion of the proceeds going to benefit their work on behalf of the refuge. For registration and information, call the refuge visitor center at 912-496-7836 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thurs-Monday. The entrance fee to the refuge is not included in the cost of the workshop.
The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge encompasses 403,119 acres in southeast Georgia. The majority of the refuge is a National Wilderness Area, part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Wilderness is defined as “an area where the earth and community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.” Wilderness areas are special and unique places to come and experience solitude and outdoor recreation.
The East Entrance to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is the primary entrance managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the visitor center is located 11 miles southwest of Folkston, GA off Hwy 121/23.
