The Worth County Music Department proudly presented “An Afternoon of Music” for their annual Spring concert this past Sunday afternoon. The WCHS Concert Band began the May 5th event at 3:00 pm in the high school’s multi-purpose room. They performed several sets including “Gopak,” “Korean Festival” and “Piper’s Rhapsody.” In the middle of the program, Dr. Christopher Hendley, who is the WCHS Choral Director, joined the band to perform soloist duties for the song “Danny Boy.” A special rendition of the song “Cheerio” was performed in honor of Eugene H. Wyles, who had rewritten a special version of the song for the high school band. During the final moments of the concert, the band’s seniors were joined onstage by their families who presented them each with a yellow carnation. “Around the World in 80 Measures” was the final performance of the afternoon before they were dismissed to join their families and friends. Some of the members were stationed at the auditorium’s doorways to accept donations from the audience in preparation of commissioning acclaimed songwriter Quincy Hilliard to compose a piece in memory of the late WCHS Band Director, Jessie Walker. Michelle Hutchinson, who is the present band director for the high school says she is “very proud of her seniors and all of their accomplishments” and she refers to them as “an important part of what we do as a band.” She is expecting to have “70-80 band members on the field next year” and is extremely excited at the almost “30% increase in band membership.” She is also quick to point out that senior Ty Fowler, who is a percussionist, will be joining four other Worth County alumni majoring in music at ABAC in the coming school year. Congratulations to the WCHS concert band; Sunday’s performance was a huge success!
