Cancer Coalition of South Georgia Announces New Name and Broadened Mission

Posted on August 1, 2016July 26, 2016 By Sylvester Local

Horizons Community SolutionsAugust 1, 2016 | Albany, GA – On August 1, 2016, the Cancer Coalition of South Georgia will officially become Horizons Community Solutions. Built upon the Cancer Coalition’s strong foundation, Horizons will continue the fight against cancer, but also will do even more to strengthen local communities toward greater health and productivity.

Moving into its 15th year, the Cancer Coalition has been effectively changing the face of cancer in the region. In fact, the organization is now recognized nationally and statewide for its innovative programs and research – and that work will continue.

“However, we realized that we must address the underlying causes of disparities in order to achieve long-term wellness in our rural communities,” said Horizons CEO Diane Fletcher. “By improving areas such as education, housing, and workforce development, we can help each community create a sustainable ‘culture of wellness’.  Horizons can and will empower community members to lead healthier and more productive lives.”

Thus Horizons Community Solutions was born, with the Cancer Coalition continuing as a division under the Horizons parent organization.

“Horizons Community Solutions is stronger and more determined than ever,” said Fletcher. “Much has been accomplished as the Cancer Coalition of South Georgia, but much remains to be done. We’re confident we can make an even greater difference by expanding our mission into these new areas.”

The Board of Directors, staff members, partners and volunteers of Horizons look forward to the time when disparities – and the associated suffering – are merely past history in South Georgia. “We remain steadfast in not only our ongoing mission of fighting cancer, but also in our exciting bigger mission of community health,” said Fletcher.
