Councilman Larry Johnson asked the Sylvester City Council during a recent meeting to consider allowing local bars and restaurants to sell liquor by the drink. The councilman proposed holding a public hearing and allowing local residents to vote on a referendum to allow the sale of liquor at Sylvester’s establishments. Councilman Randy Hill added the city is losing money by refusing to sell hard alcohol as those who wish to drink will simply drive to Moultrie, Tifton, or Albany rather than visiting a local bar or restaurant.
Though the majority of the council members seemed willing to further discuss the matter, no immediate plans were made concerning liquor sales in Sylvester. The council will hold their regular meeting for the month on Thursday, July 18.
