Coastal Outdoor Adventure Offers SharkFest Camps on Jekyll Island

Posted on June 6, 2013 By Sylvester Local

School is out, summer is here and it is time for adventure. This summer, Jekyll Island will be home to a series of two-day camps for kids, centered on eco-education and outdoor fun. Join Capt. Brooks Good and his crew from Coastal Outdoor Adventure for SharkFest Adventure Camps off the shores of Jekyll Island.
During these hands-on camps, children ages 6 to 14 will be led through two mornings of shark-based fun and learning, with opportunities for tykes to try their hands at shark fishing. While on the open waters surrounding Jekyll Island, area fishing guides will help kids reel in a variety of catches, including Bonnethead, Blacktip, Sandbar and Spinner sharks. Besides bringing home a big catch, students will also brush up on their knowledge about bait options, catch procedures and reel techniques, for sharks as well as other local fish.
“You should see the looks on these children’s faces as they reel in that first fish,” Good said. “Not only do these camps give kids a feeling of pride in themselves for tackling this new skill, it also opens their eyes to new ways of thinking about our coastal ecosystem. This hands-on activity instills in them a new respect for the world and waterways around them.”
Camps run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and cost $175 per child. In June, camps will be offered June 13 and 14, 20 and 21, and 27 and 28. July camps will be offered July 4 and 5, 11 and 12, 18 and 19, and 25 and 26. Camps are also offered in August, on August 1 and 2, 8 and 9, 15 and 16, 22 and 23, and 29 and 30.
The camps depart from Hampton River Marina and the Jekyll Wharf Marina. Please note, each two-day camp is limited to the first 18 children who register. For more information and to register online, please visit coastaloutdooradventurecamps.com.
