Matthew Rooks, a fourth grader at Worth County Elementary School was in complete shock recently when he received a personal thank you note and a Steven Jackson jersey from the Atlanta Falcons.
Matthew has been collecting hundreds of cans of food to help WCES attempt to win one of the top three places for the Atlanta Falcon Can Food Drive. Matthew said his mom, dad, entire family and his dad’s work place, Merchants Food Service, has donated cans to him to help his school out in the contest, but most especially to help feed the hungry.
“I wanted to help collect can goods,” explained Matthew. “I want to make sure that people that do not have something to eat will have it now”.
Matthew’s favorite player is Falcons running back Steven Jackson. Matthew thinks it’s cool for the Falcons to have a food drive which allows schools to participate. He also likes that his principal, Mr. Steven Rouse, supports WCES and its efforts to bring in can food and encourages them every day to do so.
Matthew, along with his parents and Mr. Rouse added 90 plus cans to the stack of food on Friday. Mr. Rouse told Matthew he wanted him to think at Thanksgiving and Christmas this year that there will be families that are having a great holiday meal because of his hard work to collect can goods.
WCES would like to thank everyone that sent in or dropped off food.
