A new Walmart will open Wed., June 4, after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The new store at 1102 E. Franklin St. is conveniently located and is open 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. It will provide Sylvester residents shopping convenience for their grocery and general merchandise needs. The store also offers pharmacy services.
“The Sylvester-Worth County Chamber of Commerce is looking forward to working with our new chamber member, Walmart, for the betterment and growth of our community,” said Karen Rackley, President and Executive Director of the Sylvester-Worth Chamber of Commerce. “With the jobs created and tax dollars that will stay at home as well as the investment that Walmart has made thus far, we are wishing Jennifer Calhoun and her staff every success.”
The store features quality, value-priced general merchandise, including apparel, electronics, toys, sporting goods, and lawn and garden items. It also offers a full line of groceries, including organic and natural selections in addition to local favorites.
The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions.
The grand-opening celebration also includes presentations of grants from Walmart to local community groups. Grant recipients include Bread of Life, Family Visions Outreach, FCA Adult Chapter, Pinson Memorials United Methodist, Worth County Elementary Clothes Closet, Worth County High School Band, Worth County Middle School, Worth County Primary School and Relay for Life.
In addition to the grants given as part of the grand opening, the new store will further Walmart’s pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart’s and the Walmart Foundation’s $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in Georgia donated approximately 29.6 million pounds of food, in fiscal year 2014, or the equivalent of 24.6 million meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $54 million in fiscal year 2014 in Georgia alone. The new store employs approximately 150 full- and part-time associates. Store manager Jennifer Calhoun began her Walmart career in 1990 as a cashier in Duluth, Georgia.
“This new Walmart has brought good jobs to the area and we’re proud to be serving the Sylvester community every day,” said Calhoun. “We’re anxious to meet our new neighbors and invite them to join us on grand-opening day.”
Walmart is happy to be part of the Sylvester community and is ready to celebrate with residents on Saturday, June 7. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Calhoun and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last. Join the celebration from noon to 3 p.m.
