Home Free, winners of NBC’s The Sing-Off Season 4, will be performing in Tifton, GA at the University of GA Conference Center. There will be two opportunities to hear this award winning country a cappella group with a performance at 3 p.m. and another at 8 p.m. Although the group and its two founding members are based in Minnesota, their lead tenor, Austin Brown, is a Tifton native.
In an interview with Kirsten Underwood for Wiregrass Channel 3, Austin explained how he became involved with singing professionally. “I grew up actually traveling around all over the southeast as a toddler… with my dad who sang southern Gospel… so I sort of got the traveling, singing bug from that.” He was always singing as a kid, always in choir in high school and then music theater. Austin has a phenomenal tenor voice. In Home Free’s performance of “Ring of Fire” during the Sing Off competition, Shawn Stockman, judge and founding member of Boyz II Men, said, “Austin, listen, your voice is as smooth as butter.”
All of the members of Home Free are incredibly talented. In addition to Austin, there is tenor Rob Lundquist, baritone Chris Rupp, bass Tim Foust, and beatboxer/vocal percussionist Adam Rupp. Tim Foust, a Texas native, has wowed crowds with his rich, bass voice which actually spans a range of five octaves. Adam Rupp makes you look around for a percussion section.
Home Free is the first a cappella group to focus on country music. They are true to the tight, great harmonies of a cappella music while also embracing the story-telling style of country music. “Our favorite tagline is ‘your eyes won’t believe what your ears are hearing!’ Using just our five voices, the audience is going to hear a complete ‘band’ sound, filled with drums, bass, guitar, horns and more,” said one of Home Free’s founders and musical director, Chris Rupp.
Home Free released its first CD with Columbia Records “Crazy Life” in February. It is now in the top 10 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart.
