The Sylvester Police Department is offering a Citizen Handgun Safety class to Sylvester residents and business owners on Saturday, October 25 from 8am until noon. The purpose of the class is to educate and instruct civilians on the proper use, safety, and laws regarding firearms. The class will be limited to 15 participants so that everyone receives one-on-one attention from a certified firearms instructor.
Citizens must bring their own handgun, ammunition, holster, and photo ID to the class. SPD stress that they will NOT have ammunition for sale, and citizens are NOT ALLOWED TO BRING AMMUNITION INTO THE CLASSROOM. No long guns will be permitted, and all participants must be at least 21 years-old. All participants must pass a background check and not have any Felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions for Domestic Violence.
Participants will learn handgun safety, proper shooting techniques, how the weapon functions, cleaning and maintenance, and Georgia firearm carry laws. When the class is complete, participants will have the opportunity to practice firing their weapon. Ear and eye protection will be provided, but the participants are encouraged to bring their own.
To register for the class, visit the Sylvester Police Department and fill out a registration form, background check, and liability waiver. Once selected for the October 25 class, participants will be contacted by phone. The class will take place at SPD’s training room located at 102 S. Isabella Street.
If you have any questions, please contact SPD’s training division at 229-776-8500. Again: DO NOT BRING AMMUNITION INTO THE CLASSROOM; LEAVE IT IN YOUR VEHICLE.
