Margaret Tanner

Margaret Sumner Tanner, age 103 of Lawrenceville, GA passed away Friday, September 11, 2015. Margaret was born on January 8, 1912, in Shingler, (Worth, County) GA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grover Herman Tanner; parents, Dr. and Mrs. Gordon

Sumner; grandson, Greg Channell; a sister, Rachel Banks; and brothers, Jack Sumner and

Clint Sumner. She is survived by her loving children, Rachel and Dwight Bronnum, Bill and

Cynthia Tanner, Peggy and Joel Weiss, Emily Tanner, Nancy and Russ Sloss, Marian Tanner, and Susan Tanner; grandchildren, Beth and Roger Stern, Peter and Rebecca Bronnum, Louise and David Gracey, Gordon and Anna Tanner, Ben and Audra Weiss, Angie Weiss, Julie Samples, Lindsay and Brad Watson, Eric Hosford, Micah Hosford, and fourteen great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Margaret graduated from Georgia State Women’s College, now Valdosta State University, where she was active in drama, captain of the soccer team, May Queen, and an honor graduate. She taught English and French in South Georgia. She married Herman Tanner in 1938 and moved to Lawrenceville, where she has resided since that time. Margaret reveled in extended family get togethers on holidays and intimate family dinners frequently, most recently with all 7 of her children. She delighted in her grandchildren and her great grandchildren, always interested in their activities.

Margaret has been an active member of Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church, where she participated in many groups including circles, Loyal Laborers’ Sunday School Class, and VSP. She worked in many PTA organizations, loved gardening and was a President of the Lawrenceville Garden Club. She was a long-time supporter of the Hi-Hope Service Center. Until recently, Margaret participated in the Twinges in the Hinges Swimming Class at the local YMCA.

A Funeral Service Celebrating the Life of Margaret was held on Sunday, September 13, 2015 at 3PM at First United Methodist Church of Lawrenceville with Dr. Bill Burch officiating. There was a reception at the church following the service. Interment followed in Shadowlawn Cemetery.

The family received friends on Saturday, September 12th from 4PM-8PM in the Tom

  1. Wages Lawrenceville Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hi Hope

Center, Hope Clinic, or Music Fund of First United Methodist Church.
