This morning’s Worth County Board of Commissioner’s meeting was packed with anxious citizens waiting to see if bids for the Carlton Road paving project would finally be opened.
The lowest price of three submitted bids came from Oxford Construction and the board voted to award them the job of paving Carlton Road. After 19 years of waiting, residents are finally able to say Carlton is on the way to being a paved road.
Chairman Cosby addressed the board concerning the resurfacing of Massey Airport Road, Woodcrest Road and Spring Flats Road. He asked if the board should continue with currents bids or if they should rebid the projects. Commissioner Billy McDonald said it is difficult for him to explain to the public why the “good end of a road” is being resurfaced but the portion that needs the most attention is not. There will be a work session held at a later date to discuss the issue.
Cosby asked to board to vote on the purchase of a new office trailer for the landfill at a price was $8,800.00 plus the cost to transfer scale equipment and hook up power.Commissioner Joe Gaines made a motion to purchase the trailer and Commissioner Mack Sutton seconded the motion. Commissioner McDonald voted yes. Commissioner Bozeman opposed stating she felt the need to purchase a trailer should have been discussed before the board even voted on a price. Chairman Cosby stated the building was being set up today.
The authorization for public works to move the surplus of 10 equipment items to an auction in Thomasville was the next item on the agenda. The date for the auction was originally set for October 26th but was changed to today.Commissioners Gaines and Sutton voted for the surplus equipment to be auctioned. Commissioner Bozeman did, too, but not before she voiced some concerns. According to Bozeman, the equipment was transferred to the auction site on October 23rd, before the equipment was even legally declared “surplus” by the board.Commissioner McDonald voted against it because he said according to the law the equipment belongs to the taxpayers and he felt like it should have been declared a surplus before leaving the county.
After handling a few other items on the agenda, County Clerk Rene Whidby requested to have it recorded as part of the meeting that all the commissioners were in receipt of her grievance, and all acknowledged they received a copy.
The next meeting will be held November 5, 2013 at 9 a.m. with a work session to follow.
