New details have been released concerning the tragic accident that involved a mother pushing her one-year-old daughter in a stroller and a Georgia Department of Public Transportation SUV on September 9. The mother involved in the incident has been identified as Lavetta Hammock. The mother was transported to Phoebe in Albany after being struck by the black Chevy Tahoe in the middle of Highway 82 between the EZ-Corner convenience store and the Kingsway Apartments.
Unfortunately, the baby girl sustained critical injuries in the crash and was transported first to Phoebe Worth before a Life-Flight helicopter carried her to Gainesville, Florida for treatment.
As of 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, the child remained in critical condition at the hospital in Gainesville.
Surveillance video from the store appears to show the mother push the stroller out into the highway and cross into the left-hand Eastbound lane (heading towards Poulan) before the government vehicle struck the pedestrians. The speed limit in the area near Walmart is 45 miles per hour. No charges have been filed against the driver of the SUV at this time.
