Sylvester Native, and current Baltimore Raven linebacker Meshak Williams has graciously agreed to take time from his busy week to share with Worth County how training camp is going.
Speaking to Meshak by phone, he shared that being in training camp with the defending Superbowl champs has been an eye opener. He appreciates the fact that Coach John Harbaugh expects nothing less than a repeat of last year’s championship squad.
“He’s a very good communicator” said Williams. “Coach definitely gets his point across,” Williams said with a laugh.
Coach Harbaugh isn’t the only one helping Williams reach his goal of making the Ravens game day roster. Former Dougherty High State championship linebacker Daryl Smith joined the Ravens in the offseason from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Smith brings 10 plus years of NFL experience to Baltimore and has been more than happy to guide and mentor our former Ram.
“He knows the position so much and has played it so long … he’s simply amazing. He’s a great teacher and mentor.”
From local recreation ball to the NFL, Williams is often asked about the speed of the game and if he has had to change to adjust to the highest level.
“Not really,” Williams replied. “I’ve always been a football player no matter what level and I’ve always given it 110% on every play. That’s all I know and have ever understood.”
One adjustment Williams has had to make is time management. “ We watch so much film and do so many things off the field to prepare. There’s more to the NFL than the average fan realizes. It’s truly a work DAY not just a two hour practice and then go home.”
With the Ravens being so deep at linebacker, Williams is hoping to make his mark with the Ravens in year one as a special team player.
“I’ll play anywhere they want me to. Whatever I can do to help and make this team better I’ll do.”
That’s the attitude of a champion.
