Funeral services for James Rutland “J.R.” Oliver Jr., 76, will be held Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at 3 p.m. at Ashburn First Baptist Church with burial to follow in Harmony Cemetery. Mr. Oliver died Monday at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Oliver was born in Turner County, GA and was the son of the late James R. Oliver Sr. and Laura Whiddon Oliver. He served in the Georgia National Guard for eight years. He was a member of Inaha Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and treasurer. He was a member of the South Georgia Beagle Club. He was a retired route supervisor for Lance, Inc. and former owner and operator of J.R.’s Gulf Service and County Line Country Store.
Mr. Oliver is survived by his wife, Benita McDonald Oliver of Sycamore, GA; children, Eve (Rick) Pope of Cairo, GA, Karen (Thomas G.) Spooner of Sylvester, GA and Gary (Melissa) Oliver of Rebecca, GA. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Zachary Kennedy of Warner Robins, GA, Alex Kennedy of Tifton, GA, Michael Pope and Kayla Pope, both of Cairo, GA, Tyler James “T.J.” Oliver and Illa Faith Oliver, both of Warner Robins, GA and Kendall Kennedy of Tifton. He is also survived by his sisters, Laverne Hobby of Sylvester, GA and Levita (Norris) Barnes of Savannah, GA.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1 until 2:30 p.m. at Ashburn First Baptist Church.
