Mrs. Latrelle Young Stewart, 86, of Sumner, GA passed away on March 1, 2014. Funeral services will be held at Terrell Baptist Church in Sumner, GA on March 08, 2014, at 2:30 p.m. with interment to follow at Hillcrest Cemetery. Pastor Brad Hughes and Reverend Mike McPherson will officiate. Visitation will be at Terrell Baptist Church from 1 until 2:30 p.m. Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Stewart was born October 22, 1927 to James (Jim) Roy Young, Sr., and Mamie Lee Turner Young in Coverdale, Turner County, Georgia. She moved to Worth County at a very young age. She was a 1944 graduate of Sumner High School and a 1945 graduate of Perry Business School in Albany, Georgia. On January 30, 1946, she married Charles Robert Stewart of Sumner, Georgia. She was employed by the Worth County Board of Education for seven years. She and her husband operated Stewart’s Country Grocery Store in Sumner for seven years.
Mrs. Stewart was instrumental in organizing the Sumner School Reunion, serving as the publicity chairman from 1989 to 2007. She served as secretary for the Sumner School Preservation Committee and was very active in obtaining a grant for the restoration of the Sumner School. She served as the secretary and publicity chairman of the local UDC chapter for several years.
Since 1962 Mrs. Stewart was a member of Terrell Baptist Church having served as organist, pianist, WMU leader, and teacher. Formerly, the family was active members at Mercedes Baptist Church while living in Albany from 1955-1962.
Mrs. Stewart’s spiritual gifts were hospitality, serving and encouragement. She loved to cook, have family reunions, and play the piano. She was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother known as Grandma Trelle.
Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Charles Robert Stewart (2007); her sisters, Juanita Sawyer (1970) and Justina Hancock (2011); her brother James R. Young, Jr. (2000); and a granddaughter-in-law, Robyn Stewart (2004).
She is survived by her children: Charles (Bess Kendrick) Stewart of Oxford, GA; Sharon (Ronald) Chapman of Sylvester, GA; and Jeannine (Brad) Senkbeil of Sumner, GA; eight grandchildren: Brad (Martha) Stewart, Todd (Becky) Stewart, Andy (Jenifer) Stewart, Keith (Tracy) Chapman, Matt (Holly) Senkbeil, Seth (Amy) Senkbeil, Kelly (Justin) Cooper, and Ben Senkbeil; 13 great-grandchildren: Bradley and Brittany Stewart; Merynda, MacKenzie, Mallory, and Isabella Stewart; Avery Ann Stewart; Matthew and Caitlyn Chapman; Bryton Puckett; Addison Young Senkbeil; Colby and Castin Cooper; her sister Carolyn (Allen) Conger and sister-in-law, Laverne Stewart.
