Robert D. McDearmid

Rev. Robert D. McDearmid, 86, of Fitzgerald, died Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Dorminy Medical Center.

Rev. McDearmid was born in Fort Valley on October 27, 1927, to Robert D. and Annie Lee Parker McDearmid. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie Porter; two brothers; and two sisters.

He attended school in Tifton and joined the Marine Corps in 1945. He served for six years and was stationed in Japan, China, and Guam. He also served in the active reserves during the Korean War. He graduated from Douglasville High School following his service. Rev. McDearmid was a former bank examiner in Eau Gallie and Jacksonville, FL. He moved to Fitzgerald in 1960 and worked as a teller at First State Bank.

He accepted the call to preach the Gospel and served churches throughout south Georgia. He was ordained in Poulan on March 29, 1953. His almost 60-year ministry planted seeds in congregations at Kennedy Memorial, Westside and Faith Baptist churches in Fitzgerald, as well as Amboy, New Hope in Ambrose and Pridgen Baptist Church. He loved to fish and was passionate about Purple Hurricane football and the Atlanta Braves. His dog, Luan, was a faithful companion.

Survivors include son, Rev. Bobby (Tina) McDearmid of Fitzgerald; daughter, Miriam (Eddy) Reeves of Fitzgerald; grandchildren, Tanera (Josh) Alves of St. Simons Island, Rob (Miranda) McDearmid of Brunswick, and Ross (Anna Joy) Reeves of Fitzgerald; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 21, at Westside Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Rusty Brock and Reverends Robert Couey, Robby McDearmid and Jimmy Cargle officiating.

Music was provided by pianist Julie Martin and vocalists Susan Harper, George Martin, Larry Latham and Rev. Robby McDearmid. Betty Martin led the congregation in singing.

Pallbearers were William Stevens, Andy Westberry, Beth McQuaig, John Alves, Franklin Sumner and Bobby Sanderlin Jr.

Interment, with military honors, was in Evergreen Cemetery.

The family suggests that those desiring to send memorial donations may send them to Gideons International, P.O. Box 752, Fitzgerald, Ga. 31750, Westside Baptist Church, c/o Butch Dale, 211 Walker Rd., Fitzgerald, Ga. 31750, Fellowship Baptist Church, P.O. Box 777, Fitzgerald, Ga. 31750 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

The Paulk Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
