William “Bill” Lane

William “Bill” P Lane age 85, of Tifton died Saturday October 19, 2019 at Pruitt Health in Ashburn.

Private Graveside Services will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery in Sylvester.

Bill was born March 31, 1934 in Monticello, Ga. to the late Augustus Lane and Elizabeth Persons Ballard.  He attended Mercer University where he was in Mercer Glee Club, ATO Fraternity, played football and graduated in the class of 1956. He married Martha Benton in 1956 and shared 60 years of marriage until her death in 2016. Bill began a banking career lasting over 40 years in 1957 with positions in Macon, Fitzgerald and retiring as President of SunTrust in Sylvester, Ga. He was very civic mined and was involved in the communities his family called home, an avid golfer, a loving husband, father and friend. He was a member of First Baptist Church Sylvester for many years, later transferring his membership and service to First Baptist Church Tifton after relocating to Tifton in 2006.

Survivors include, one son, William P. (Donna) Lane Jr, one daughter, Del Lane Jones (Stan Mitchell), four grandchildren, Eric (Ashley) Lane, Michael Sikes, Daniel (Kristen) Harris and Julianne (Cody) Padgett, four great grandchildren and one Brother, John “Sonny” Lane.

In addition to his parents Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Benton Lane and grandson, William Scott Lane.
