Margie Jones

Posted on July 3, 2019 By Sylvester Local

Margie Garrett Jones, 78, of Charleston, SC, wife of Verlon Keith Jones, entered into eternal rest on Friday June 7, 2019. Family and Friends are invited to her Celebration of Life on Friday July 12, 2019 at the Springhill Country Club, 5 Springhill Dr. E Tifton, GA from 1-5pm.

Margie is survived by her husband of 54 years, Verlon; surrogate daughters and nieces, Regina Disharoon (David) of Gainesville, GA and Keli Koniver and son Alex (Craig) of Charleston, SC; surrogate son and nephew Keith Jones (Rebecca) of Las Vegas, NV as well as a host of other nieces and nephews to include Jerry Brooks (Linda) of Norman Park, GA;  Volare Barfield (Robert) of Las Vegas, NV; Gary Simmons (Mary Ann) of Tifton, GA; Don Simmons of Valdosta, GA and Kristie Patterson of Gainesville, GA. While too many to mention, many extended family members and dear friends that she deeply loved also survive Margie.

Margie was born February 11, 1941 in Omega, GA, the youngest of five children of the late Leon Jasper Garrett and Addie Mae Garrett (Thompson). She graduated valedictorian of Norman Park High School in 1959, where she was the star of her high school basketball team. After graduation, she moved to Florida to continue her education and married the love of her life, Verlon, in 1965.

Margie and Verlon lived in Tift County, GA from 1966-1986 when they moved to Poulan, GA and eventually Charleston, SC in 2018 to be closer to their niece Keli and to seek medical care for Margie’s illness. After a seven-year battle, Margie succumbed to cancer in her home surrounded by loved ones.

Margie loved playing golf with her friend as well as other friends in the monthly scramble she helped organize at Pineknoll Country Club. Additional hobbies over the years included tractor pulling, league bowling, motorcycling, offshore fishing with her husband, watching Florida Gators football and softball and PGA golf on TV, and of course shopping.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings: Leon J. Garrett Jr. “Buck”, Josephine Brooks, Sara Simmons, and Betty Teal, her niece Charlotte Teal, nephew Wayne Simmons, and her beloved Yorkie of 16 years, KB.

Margie requested no flowers for her Celebration of Life.

Memorial gifts may be directed in lieu of flowers to the MUSC Foundation/Hollings Cancer Center, 18 Bee Street, MSC450, Charleston, SC 29425
